Occurrence of Eutypella species on cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) in New South Wales, Australia

Abstract We report for the first time occurrence of an Eutypella species on cotton in New South Wales (NSW), Australia. The putative was isolated from dead plants that exhibited atypical symptoms either Fusarium or Verticillium wilt. Dead had resembling lightning strike damage with blackened outer bark around fifth node zone. Internal vascular discoloration reddish grey and often occurred V-shaped sections. Sequences internal transcribed spacer (ITS) revealed a 93.7–94.1% similarity to scoparia , indicating NSW isolates represented putatively novel within genus. Pathogenicity assessed stem cuts living inoculated culture agar plugs. Typical black necroses were reinduced both -inoculated plants. Subsequently, same pathogen successfully recovered, thus fulfilling Koch’s postulates. detection is believed be independent event recently reported Queensland cotton. 2017/18 cropping season at approximately 730 km apart associated distinct isolates.
